So on what grounds can Meta be sued? According to the letter sent by Alex Spiro, a lawyer for Twitter, the company can take legal action against Meta for engaging in “systematic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.” In other words, Twitter is accusing Meta of being a copycat in creating Threads.

In the letter, it reads that “Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information". On top of that, the letter also mentioned that Meta has allegedly hired dozens of former Twitter employees who “had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.

However, Andy Stone, Communications Director of Meta refuted the claims and said that Twitter's accusations are baseless. He said none of the engineering team in Threads is a former Twitter employee. Elon Musk hasn't said anything about Threads yet, but Twitter's new CEO Linda Yaccarino indirectly took a shot at the new platform.
