The struggling Toronto Blue Jays offence was held to one run after getting in an early hole during a 3\u002D1 loss to the host Minnesota Twins.
Redemption for that horrific two-game playoff sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners in Toronto last October, a loss that prompted wholesale off-season changes.
The result was a 3-1 win for the home side, one powered spectacularly by their outstanding rookie Royce Lewis, who clobbered a two-run homer off Gausman in the first and a solo shot in the third. As we’ve seen from the Jays too often this season, an early deficit often feels prohibitive, especially when facing an excellent starter like the Twins’ Pablo Lopez.
In fact, a procession of Jays pitchers only allowed five hits to the Twins and just three from starter Gausman. The trouble, of course, is that two were explosive home runs to jump out to a 3-0 lead, the kind of margin that feels like a death sentence for this team. The big talking point of the Jays laggardly offence in this one was a fourth-inning daring and ultimately ill-advised dash by Bichette what resulted in an inning ending out at home plate.Bichette’s grounder had slipped under the glove of Twins third baseman Jorge Polanco forcing shortstop Carlos Correa to make a mad run to recover.
