Death Cab for Cutie bassist Nick Harmer recalls the last time the band visited Ottawa as a “terrifying” day that threw a “curveball” into their summer tour more than a decade ago.

Things changed in an instant. In a sudden storm that stands as one of the most memorable and shocking weather events in the city’s history, a freak gust of wind, estimated at 117 km/h, slammed the main stage, causing it to topple seconds after Cheap Trick decided to swiftly leave the stage.

“I never thought that wind alone could lift one of those festival stages up off the ground and have it come smashing down on top of everything. In my wildest dreams, I never imagined that was a possibility. It was scary and a real eye-opening kind of thing.”Article content “So yeah, it kind of threw a little bit of a curveball into our summer touring plans because most of our equipment was stuck under a pile of rubble.”

This time, the band is touring behind their 10th studio album, Asphalt Meadows, a surprisingly vibrant record that was made during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, Death Cab for Cutie had wound down their touring and were starting to think about writing and recording a new album.

“Since there’s five of us in the band, every day there was a new person and by Friday, whoever had it last got to finish it up and send it to everybody else,” Harmer said, noting the parameters of the process: Each person could do whatever they wanted, even if it was minimal, but they couldn’t talk about it with each other and they had to leave the lyrics for Gibbard to write.Article content
