The Toronto Transit Commission is speaking out in the hopes of preventing subway suicides. It’s a move that represents a break from a decades long policy of silence about deaths on the tracks.

A union representing some 12,000 TTC workers says its members have ratified a new contract after a lengthy negotiating process that nearly ended in a strike.Posted: Jun 19, 2024 7:04 AM EDT | Last Updated: 1 hour agoA union representing some 12,000 TTC workers says its members have ratified a new contract after a lengthy negotiating process that nearly ended in a strike.

In a news release late Tuesday, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 said more than 80 per cent of its members voted in favour of the deal. The contract "prioritizes job security, improved benefits, fair wage increases" and addresses some of the union's concerns about the ongoing process to integrate public transit across municipal boundaries in the GTA, the release said.ATU Local 113 represents about three quarters of all TTC employees, including many frontline roles such as operators, fare collectors, maintenance workers and stations staff.

Bargaining with TTC management began in February, shortly before the previous collective agreement expired in late March.
