Stefanos Tsitsipas, a two-time Grand Slam finalist, seeks to leave behind a disappointing 2024 season and kickstart his campaign for a maiden major title at the United Cup.
Stefanos Tsitsipas stated on Friday that he will begin the season-opening United Cup teams event this week with a fresh mental outlook as the two-time Grand Slam finalist continues his pursuit of an elusive first major title. The Greek star reached the French Open final in 2021 and was a runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2023, but he is yet to secure the championship.
He had a below-average 2024 season, dropping in ranking to his current position of 11 from a career-high three, managing just one title, a repeat victory at Monte Carlo. However, the 26-year-old, who will lead his nation in Perth with a Sunday round-robin match against Spain, is eager to leave the past behind and reignite his longstanding tennis ambition. Tsitsipas said his defeat against 10-time Australian Open champion Djokovic nearly two years ago was a significant learning experience. 'That (final) was my best memory on court ever, even if I lost. I was faced with a potential Grand Slam title, an important moment in my career,' he said. 'This was the only time in life that felt like all was in my control. Unfortunately (victory) didn’t happen but I was focused 100 percent. I get emotional thinking of how close I got to what I’ve dreamed of.' Following his 2024 struggles, the Greek player is aiming to jumpstart his comeback in Perth before another attempt at the Australian Open in January. 'It’s a story of constant improvement,' he said. 'Last year I struggled, I’m not looking (necessarily) for happiness, just good memories. I want to start fresh and new in 2025.
