The response has overwhelmingly been for him to skip the debate.

To qualify for the 23 August debate, candidates need to satisfy polling and donor requirements set by the Republican national committee . They must have reached at least 1% in three high-quality national polls or a mix of national and early-state polls, between 1 July and 21 August, and a minimum of 40,000 donors, with 200 in 20 or more states. Candidates must also sign a pledge promising to support the party’s ultimate nominee.
