According to the network, the President-elect said that if Canada cannot survive without its annual US$100-billion trade deficit with the U.S., then it might as well become the 51st state.

He was quoted as suggesting splitting Canada into two, admitting that the states with more liberal tendencies could join the U.S. separately. The President-elect's transition team and the Prime Minister's Office did not respond to requests for comment
