Provincial and territorial premiers say they’re open to what Justin Trudeau puts on the table as they prepare to work on new health funding.

Premiers have staunchly resisted federally dictated conditions on new health-care funding for years, but that stance has softened over the last few weeks. The provincial and federal governments are unlikely to come to an agreement Tuesday, and have characterized the meeting as a first step in the negotiations.Canada needs immediate health-care support, as well as a more modern system that will respond to the challenges of the future, Trudeau said on his way into the meeting with the premiers.
On his way into a morning cabinet meeting, he said the federal government will be “investing significantly” to upgrade the system. As the premiers arrived at the meeting with the prime minister, Singh addressed a crowd of health-worker unions and associations on Parliament Hill. He told them it was time to send a message to the Liberal government and Conservative premiers to spend more money on their health systems.Article content
On Tuesday, Trudeau cited getting more family doctors, shorter waiting lists, support to recruit and retrain workers and improving mental health care as some of those possible areas.Article content
