Trudeau’s upcoming appearance before Emergencies Act Inquiry politically ‘risky,’ say political players via thehilltimes

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, pictured on Oct. 6, 2022, in the Commons foyer talking to reporters. The prime minister and some of his cabinet ministers will appear before the Public Order Emergency Commission in the coming days to explain specifically why the government invoked the Emergencies Act to end the Freedom Convoy protest back in February. The story link will be added automatically.

The Trudeau government invoked the Emergencies Act on Feb. 14 which gave it additional tools to successfully end the blockades. Once the Emergencies Act is enforced, it requires the government to set up an inquiry and explain why it enacted it. If an election were to happen now, according to Nanos Research, the Conservatives would win 108 seats, the Liberals 106, the NDP 41, Bloc Québécois 24, and the Greens two seats. Nanos Research also suggested that there were 57 ridings that were too close to call.

An Ipsos poll conducted between Sept. 19-21 suggested that the Conservatives had the support of 35 per cent of Canadians compared to the Liberals who were at 30 per cent. The New Democrats were at 20 per cent and the Greens and the People’s Party of Canada were tied at three per cent each.

Since the Liberals first came to power in 2015, they have been re-elected twice, albeit with minority governments. Each time, their share of the popular vote has gone down. The next election will be the fourth consecutive for the Liberals, a serious challenge for any political party to win. Frank Graves, president of Ekos Research agreed: “There’s always risk, I mean, you don’t want to be explaining, you don’t want to have any facts come out that looked like you were concealing things,” said Graves. “I’m not expecting there will be any dramatic sitting smoking-guns, or anything like that, but you never know.”
