On Monday, the minister responsible for secularism, Jean-François Roberge, issued a statement calling for Elghawaby to be removed from her post because of her remarks about Quebecers’ “anti-Muslim sentiment” and her criticism of Bill 21, Quebec’s state secularism law.she co-authored with Bernie Farber in the Ottawa Citizen.

“I had hoped the Liberal federal government would have taken note of Quebec’s position,” Roberge said. “Unfortunately, is sticking to his guns. We are able to combat racism, sexism and all forms of discrimination in Quebec without the help of the federal government.” “We gave her a chance to correct her remarks, to apologize,” he said. “She chose to not do this, in an inappropriate way. Her statements about Quebec, about the Quebec nation, are completely unacceptable. We are asking for her resignation. We think Mr. Trudeau cannot keep her in this post.”
