The prime minister, however, would not say if he would be raising the issue with U.S. President Joe Biden during this week\u0027s NATO summit.
Speaking at a news conference in Latvia on Monday, Trudeau reiterated Canada’s commitment to the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions, an international treaty which prohibits use of the weapon and which has been ratified by more than 100 countries, such as France and Germany.“Canada was one of the countries that led on the banning of cluster munitions around the world and we will continue to stand very strongly that they should not be used,” said Trudeau.
Cluster munitions are a type of explosive weapon which scatters little “bomblets” once launched. It has been the focus of international treaties because of the risks for civilians — including children — who could come across unexploded munitions well after a conflict has ended. The U.S. confirmed last week it would be sending the cluster munitions to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package after many months of debate.
Trudeau on Monday said he recognizes Ukraine’s need for more munitions to push back against Russia’s illegal invasion and said allies are “working very, very hard” to deliver just that. “It is not as unanimous across NATO … but I know there is a deep commitment to Ukraine, to Ukraine’s security and to Ukraine’s future shared by all members of NATO, and the conversations on exactly how we’re going to articulate that are continuing right now,” he said.Biden said that Ukraine is not yet ready to join NATO membership and that the war needs to end before the alliance can consider it.
