Some entrepreneurs offer ‘mobile vehicle inspection services’, a sort of halfway-PPI that can be booked to get a second opinion at a convenient time and place. These services generally charge a reasonable rate and then provide a detailed, easy-to-read report of their findings. Mobile inspection and repair services aren’t really new, but with pre-owned vehicle prices still much higher than in pre-pandemic times, more consumers are looking for ways to make sure they get as fair a deal as they can.
We spoke to a founder of one of these services that’s been operating in several major urban centres across the country for just under a year. They currently complete between 150-200 inspections per month with a staff of about 35, made up mostly of retired automotive technicians. They don’t remove any wheels or get under the vehicle.
