Tropical Storm Bertha, the second named storm of the Atlantic season, is impacting the U.S. Gulf Coast with heavy rain, coastal flooding, and storm surge warnings for Florida and Louisiana. The storm is expected to weaken by Wednesday.
Tropical Storm Bertha has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the second named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm is currently located approximately 90 miles southwest of Panama City, Florida, and is moving westward with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Bertha is expected to bring coastal flooding and heavy rainfall to parts of northwestern Florida and Louisiana. Tropical storm warnings and watches have been issued for these areas. The storm is forecast to weaken by Wednesday. A dangerous combination of storm surge and high tide could lead to flooding in normally dry coastal areas.
Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches, raising the risk of flash flooding, particularly in urban regions. Despite this early activity, forecasters predict a below-normal hurricane season this year due to the influence of El Niño, which tends to suppress Atlantic storm development. An average season typically sees 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30
