Tropical cyclone Maymay has slightly strengthened as it tracks erratically over Ilocos Sur. PAGASA has issued Signal No. 2 warnings across a broad region and forecast a gradual weakening of the storm by Thursday.
On Wednesday at around 2 p.m. Philippine time the national meteorological agency PAGASA announced that the tropical cyclone known as Maymay has slightly strengthened while continuing to drift across the Ilocos Sur province near the town of Sinait.
The system sits about 160 kilometres to the west‑southwest of Sinait and currently boasts maximum sustained winds of roughly 75 kilometres per hour, with gusts that can peak near 90 kilometres per hour. Despite its moderate intensity the storm's path has been described as erratic as the cyclone veers toward the northeast in a slow, meandering motion that keeps many communities under the watchful eye of the weather service.
Mounting gale force winds have prompted PAGASA to maintain a Signal No. 2 across a wide swath of the northwestern Philippines. This covers the entirety of Ilocos Sur, the most northern and central barangays of La Union such as Luna and San Fernando, the upper reaches of Pangasinan including Bolinao and Bani, as well as sizeable portions of the Cordillera region including parts of Abra, Mountain Province and Benguet.
Regions like Ilocos Norte, the rest of La Union, the remainder of Pangasinan, Apayao, Kart, and the mountainous provinces of Ifugao and Kalinga have also been placed under a lower-level Signal No. 1. While residents in Signal No. 2 zones can anticipate wind speeds ranging from sixty to ninety kilometres per hour in the coming 24 hours, those in Signal No. 1 areas should prepare for breezy conditions of roughly thirty to sixty kilometres per hour over the next day and a half.
Looking ahead PAGASA foresees that by the nightfall of Wednesday Maymay will reposition itself along the coast of Santiago in Ilocos Sur, gradually losing strength. By Thursday morning it should downgrade to a tropical depression near Aguinaldo in Ifugao, and later that evening it is projected to become a low‑pressure area off the shores of Dinapigue in Isabela.
Local authorities in high‑risk counties have urged residents to secure loose objects, stay indoors during peak wind periods, and remain alert for potential flash flooding in low‑lying terrain. Despite its expected weakening the storm still represents a serious threat to the archipelago's northern peninsula and PAGASA will continue to monitor its evolution closely
