Former Senator Trillanes alleges Vice President Duterte and Carpio received Chinese funds. Defense Secretary Teodoro urges evidence submission as Duterte's camp denies claims.
Former Senator Antonio Trillanes has alleged that Vice President Sara Duterte and lawyer Carpio received hundreds of millions of pesos from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China through the Office of the Vice President’s foundation and Carpio’s company. The allegation, made public this week, has sparked calls for evidence and denials from Duterte’s legal team.
Teodoro Urges Evidence Submission
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said on Saturday that the allegations, if substantiated, raise serious implications for national security. He called on Trillanes to submit any evidence to law enforcement authorities for thorough investigation.
Teodoro issued the statement as the controversy intensified, emphasizing the need for proper legal channels to address the claims. He did not comment on the veracity of the allegations but stressed the importance of due process.
Duterte Camp Denies Allegations
Vice President Duterte’s spokesperson, Salvador Paolo Panelo Jr., strongly denied the allegations, calling them fabrications. He said the Vice President would gladly sue Trillanes for these endless fabrications, but noted that those who peddle malicious lies against her and her family are openly protected and propped up by this administration.
Panelo also criticized Trillanes for not stating these claims in the Senate impeachment court, where he could have been under oath. He pointed out that the vice president’s defense team was not able to question him.
Panelo described Trillanes’ sudden retreat as absolute proof that his claims cannot survive real legal scrutiny and are nothing but black propaganda, which he said is par for the course for a professional character assassin.
Trillanes Withdrawn from Impeachment Trial
Trillanes was withdrawn on Thursday as a witness for the prosecution in the Senate impeachment trial of Duterte. The former senator said he requested House prosecutors to withdraw him so he could conduct a press conference to reveal everything he would have disclosed in the trial.
Trillanes also claimed he was unwelcome in the impeachment trial, but impeachment court spokesperson Regie Tongol dismissed this assertion. The withdrawal came amid heightened political tensions in the Philippines.
The allegations and subsequent reactions highlight ongoing political friction. The Chinese Embassy has not issued a statement on the matter. Law enforcement authorities have yet to receive any evidence from Trillanes, according to Teodoro’s statement.
The impeachment trial continues without Trillanes as a witness, while the public awaits further developments. The Vice President has not personally commented on the allegations, leaving her spokesperson to address the media.
