Transport truck drivers are calling on the province to do more to keep Ontario highways safer.

Transport drivers are warning motorists to get ready for a “scary” winter on Northern Ontario highways.

McDougall helped form Truckers for Safer Highways and he says they currently have two petitions in the House of Commons. “After the Humboldt tragedy we want provinces to make it mandatory to implement MELT – mandatory entry level training,” McDougall told The Nugget Wednesday.“There are a couple of reasons – there is an insufficient amount of driver training. The more I look into it the more concerning it gets.”McDougall said the weigh scales and inspection stations across Ontario highways are the province’s checks and balances.

“Like others in the province, the station is open and operated at intermittent times. When the station is open, trucks must enter and stop for inspection,” the MTO stated in an email to The Nugget.
