Efforts to transform seed grower groups into cooperatives are anticipated to enhance Calabarzon 's (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) seed supply system. Farmer-leaders, participating in a recent forum hosted by the Department of Agriculture -Philippine Rice Research Institute, emphasized the potential for reduced transportation costs and streamlined operations.Two prominent organizations, the Quezon Palay Seed Growers Association Inc. and the Samahan ng mga Magbibinhi sa Laguna Inc.
(Samalagun), are poised to merge with the Agriculture Cooperative of Progressive Laguna as they transition into formal cooperatives. Farmer-leaders underscored that this move will significantly lower transportation expenses, optimize seed distribution, and facilitate access to government programs. 'Becoming a cooperative offers tax advantages and shared resources, which will contribute to reducing expenses and establishing a more efficient supply chain,' stated Aryn Ramos, secretary of Samalagun. 'While fulfilling the initial requirements presented challenges, the long-term benefits outweigh the difficulties,' she added. The forum, attended by 80 seed growers and farmer-leaders, also delved into crucial topics such as seed supply trends of the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund Seed Program, seed certification standards, and production management practices. Seed inspectors received training on quality control processes to guarantee that certified seeds adhere to national standards throughout the entire cultivation process from planting to harvest
