Transatlantic sailor from Thunder Bay reaches the Azores Islands

LAJES DAS FLORES, AZORES ISLANDS — A Thunder Bay sailor's epic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean has taken him to the Azores Islands, but Dan Turk still has a considerable distance to go.

After embarking on a solo journey from Halifax three weeks ago, Turk reached the community of Lajes das Flores, on Flores Island, on Tuesday morning. In a brief message to TBnewswatch, he said he was resting to make up for lost sleep and preparing to set off Wednesday for his next destination, Horta, on Faial Island.But after spending 21 days alone on the water, the veteran sailor will still have about 1,800 kilometres to go before he reaches his ultimate destination — Portugal.
