I don’t know if there’s friction between Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock and general manager Kyle Dubas.
If there is, it wouldn’t be the first time that a coach and GM didn’t see eye-to-eye. And it wouldn’t necessarily prevent the team from success.
First, the Leafs weren’t heavy enough. Then the backup goaltending wasn’t good enough. Now, with Jake Gardiner and Travis Dermott out with injuries, it’s a lack of depth. If the Leafs fail to advance — and with four losses in the past five games heading into Wednesday night, they don’t look like a team capable of going on a lengthy run — there will be hell to pay. And everyone, from the players to the coaching staff to management, will be feeling it.As long as John Tavares, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly and Frederik Andersen are healthy, the coach won’t get any sympathy for the so-called lack of depth.
A year earlier, the Jets traded for Stastny and received favourable results. This year, they went looking for his doppleganger and ended up with a 6-foot-5 and 216-pound centre.Cheveldayoff was part of the management team that originally drafted Hayes to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010. So he had watched Hayes play at Boston College, where he was linemates with Calgary Flames winger Johnny Gaudreau.
