Toronto Star journalist Saba Eitizaz has mixed feelings about the press freedom award she received Wednesday night for her work on behalf of all female Canadian journalists fighting back against misogyny and online abuse.
But Eitizaz is also proud to accept the award on behalf of all female journalists, particularly those who are racialized and have had to deal with smear campaigns and abuse that “affects not just our work, but our physical health. Eitizaz is sharing the Tara Singh Hayer Award with Rachel Gilmore, of Global TV, and Erica Ifill, a journalist with The Hill Times. They received the honour at the gala fundraising event “A Night to Honour Courageous Reporting” hosted by the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, an organization that works to defend and protect free expression and press freedom.
“In the summer of 2021, Saba, Rachel and Erica went on the attack of their attackers, refusing to accept harassment as part of the job,” a CJFE news release said. “Their collective efforts have sparked a national conversation, empowering female journalists to speak out.”
