BREAKING: Ontario's largest school board says its schools will be closed to in-person learning starting Friday and for the duration of the strike.
In an update Wednesday evening, the Toronto District School Board notified parents and guardians about their plan if its education workers walk off the job in two days.
“Student supervision and safety are our top priorities and without the important services of nearly 15,000 CUPE employees, we cannot guarantee that our learning environments will remain safe and clean for all students,” the TDSB said in its update. CUPE, which represents 55,000 education workers across the province, are planning to strike on Friday despite legislation that would ban them from doing so.
On Wednesday, the union confirmed they will go on strike “until further notice” unless a non-legislated deal with the government is reached. On Friday, the TDSB said students will be given work to complete at home independently. As for its plans should the job action continues beyond Friday, “more information will be shared.”
