Toronto FC has secured some much\u002Dneeded help on the back line.

Petretta, 25, will fill in for Italian veteran Domenico Criscito, who decided to leave Toronto this off-season after less than one season. Petretta recently appeared in 12 matches across all competitions for Kasımpaşa since joining the Turkish side in July 2022. Prior to signing with Kasımpaşa, Petretta spent four seasons at FC Basel , where he made 152 appearances across all competitions for the team, registering 10 goals and 12 assists in the process.

The Reds are currently at pre-season camp in San Diego before returning to Toronto for a few days this Friday. The rebuilding club is still looking for some help at centre back, midfield and in goal. TFC is said to be pushing hard to sign free agent keeper Sean Johnson. Johnson played the last six seasons with the New York City FC and was named the MLS Cup MVP in 2021. A long-time American international, Johnson, 33 long been considered one of the top keepers in MLS.

TFC did not bring back veteran goalkeepers Alex Bono and Quentin Westberg this year. In November, the Reds claimed 22-year-old keeper Tomas Romero in the 2022 MLS Re-Entry Draft, re-uniting the El Salvador international with his coach at LAFC, Bob Bradley, who said Romero was in the fight for the No.1 job, though it was a given that TFC was still going to sign another keeper, one with plenty of MLS experience.

During this current off-season, the club signed 2016 MLS Defender of the Year Matt Hedges, brought back veteran attacking midfielder Victor Vazquez, re-signed long-serving midfielder Jonathan Osorio and signed Norwegian forward Adama Diomande. TFC has missed the MLS Cup playoffs two seasons in a row and Bradley vowed that the 2023 version of the club will be one of the most competitive clubs in the league.

The exhibition schedule begins in earnest for TFC in February as the club plays for games in the second annual Coachella Valley Invitational at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. The first match will be against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Feb.8. TFC played a closed-door scrimmage against Mexican side Club Tijuana on Sunday. Not details from the match have been released. The MLS regular season begins for MLS on Feb. 25 when the Reds travel to DC United.
