Toronto City Council passed the 2023 municipal budget Wednesday night and along with it, a $48.3M increase to the Toronto Police Service’s (TPS) funding.
The hike in police funding represents a 4.3 per cent increase over the 2022 budget, and brings TPS’ total 2023 operating budget to $1.16B.
The funding was passed despite a motion brought forward by Ward 9–Davenport Councillor Alejandra Bravo that proposed $900,000 be reallocated from the police service’s budget increase and invested into operating 24/7 warming centres. Bravo’s motion failed 8-17. Councillors Bravo, Fletcher, Malik, Matlow, Moise, Morley, Perks, and Robinson voted in favour.
