The best and brightest women’s professional hockey players finished off a busy weekend in Ottawa with an entertaining skills competition and a series of tight…
The Ottawa stop included games in Kemptville and Gatineau on Friday, followed by two more Saturday at the Canadian Tire Centre, along with clinics for minor hockey players. The bonus for the crowd in Canada’s capital was having an additional day of all-star action Sunday.
She was flying again Sunday at the home of the Ottawa Senators — coach D.J. Smith was on hand to serve as an honorary coach — with scores of young girls hockey players screaming and jumping in the stands. That speed was also on display later on in the day as the players took part in a series of 3-on-3 games, using a 10-minute running clock.
The players held an internal draft to pick the All-Star teams and Team Keller — headlined by U.S. star Megan Keller — defeated Team Knight 2-1 in the championship final. The other squads were led by Marie-Philip Poulin, who last week won the Northern Star Award as Canada’s top athlete of the 2022, and fellow Canadian Olympic star Sarah Nurse.
However, not a single player was made available to Postmedia following the game. Repeated requests for interviews were declined because of what communication officials said were tight flight deadlines to get out of Ottawa for a variety of destinations as quickly as possible. “We want to be able to generate some conversation and some noise in the market and I think we’ve done that. We’ve brought the best players in the world here to spend the weekend and the players have done an amazing job of showcasing the game in the best possible way,” Hefford said. “I think it’s going to leave a lasting impact. When you look at so many young players that we’ve seen . They’re getting autographs or meeting players and that creates dreams and goals.
