Despite a threatened Trump slump and poor U.S.-Canadian exchange rate, Canadians are still flocking to America’s most popular vacation destinations.

Just after Donald Trump was elected president of the U.S. in November 2016, incredulous Canadians vowed to curb their travel to the U.S., along with ensuing demonstrations that showed their unhappiness with the president’s trade dealings, immigration and travel restrictions, and his puzzling claim that Canada was a national security threat.

Overall in the past two years, Canadians still favour Las Vegas, Florida, California and Hawaii. For B.C. travellers, the choice is California — specifically Anaheim, Palm Springs and San Fransisco. Disneyland and Las Vegas are the two biggest draws and have been for years, according to Allison Wallace, Flight Centre’s vice-president corporate communications. And she notes that Palm Springs has become the new “it” place that now competes with Arizona for the attention of Canadian travellers.

Overnight trips from Canada to the U.S. rose almost five per cent in 2017, according to Statistics Canada, a trend that Flight Centre backs up as well. At the same time, a blip in international travel saw the U.S. lose an estimated $2.7 billion in the months following Trump’s election, with Las Vegas tourism reflecting the most marked drop.

How U.S. tourism has been affected, though, is from a decline in international travellers. In the first three quarters of 2017, international travel to the U.S. fell by 3.8 per cent, according to the Washington Post. And those numbers reflect a decrease overall for travellers to the U.S. — except for Canadians. As the Canadian Girl Guides halted trips to the U.S., followed by a similar ban on U.S.
