In 2009, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of B.C., the province’s top trial court, and was then elevated to the position of Chief Justice of the B.C. Court of Appeal in 2013. One of his most notable rulings as a judge came in 2011 when he was Chief Justice of the B.C. Supreme Court and released a decision that upheld Canada’s law against polygamy, the practice of having more than one wife or husband at the same time.
