Former NBA champion Andrew Bogut has revealed there were players outside of the Cairns Taipans team who also disagreed with the NBL’s pride round jersey.

Several Taipans players were allegedly considering not wearing the pride jersey, which led to the club ultimately pulling out of the plan entirely due to harmful commentary directed toward their players.

“It is sold as ‘everyone must do it’ and this is what happens when you have two or three people that don’t, it just causes absolute shockwaves and the media jumps all over it, they love the division and the talking point of this,” Mr Bogut told Sky News host Paul Murray. “I’m for freedom of choice on it, so if someone wants to support it then by all means, but this whole thing that it was just two or three players – I know for a fact there were more than that in the league that were kind of like ‘oh, that is kind of against my beliefs’.

“They were too scared to not go ahead with it, but that is not just the Cairns Taipans, I know that for a fact.”

NBL knew support for its inaugural Pride Round was ‘not unanimous’NBL knew support for its inaugural Pride Round was ‘not unanimous’NBL has taken the “easy and convenient” first step for its inaugural Pride Round while being aware support was “not unanimous”, says UNSW Faculty of Law and Justice Professor Lucas Lixinski. Mr Lixinski joined Sky News Australia to discuss the impact of several Cairns Taipans players being reportedly unwilling to wear the club’s Pride guernsey in the NBL’s first-ever Pride Round. “They can encourage their athletes … which is what they are doing to support LGBTIQ+ communities,” Mr Lixinski said. “But in my view, they cannot force athletes who oppose on the basis of their religious beliefs.”

‘Very unlikely’ Australia Day is being celebrated for the ‘atrocities of the past’‘Very unlikely’ Australia Day is being celebrated for the ‘atrocities of the past’Former NBA champion Andrew Bogut says he finds it very unlikely people are celebrating Australia Day because of the “atrocities of the past”. He said it is possible a “small minority of morons” would be celebrating it for this reason. “For the most part, I’ve got naturalised Australians that are not from Australia who see that day as a very special day for them because it was the day they got enshrined, got the citizenship,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray. “I think 99 plus per cent of people are having a barbeque, having a beer and catching up with mates and not what it has been made out to be as kind of Invasion Day.” The Rogue Bogues Podcast host added people should stop trying to “cancel other people’s joy”.
