DA-Davao reports stable prices for basic commodities and vegetables in January 2025, contrasting with nationwide price hikes due to typhoon-related supply shortages.
The Department of Agriculture - Davao Region (DA-Davao) reported that the price of basic commodities, particularly lowland and upland vegetables, remained stable in January 2025. This comes after tomato prices in some public markets in the National Capital Region (NCR) surged up to 400 percent due to a significant decrease in local supply following typhoons that hit the country last year.
In an interview on January 9th, DA-Davao Information Officer Celso Vergara stated that the retail price of tomatoes in the region during the first week of January was P140 per kilogram, compared to P170 recorded on December 27, 2024, a decrease of P30 per kilogram. This price is relatively lower and more affordable than some retailers in Metro Manila selling tomatoes between P200 and P300 per kilogram. Vergara assured that the agency will continue its price monitoring through the implementation of Republic Act 7581 (the Price Act) to protect consumers from unreasonable price increases and ensure fair market practices. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal price manipulation activities. At Bankerohan and Agdao Public Markets, tomato prices ranged between P140 to P150 per kilogram. Rejie Ann Castilonnes, a long-time vendor at Bankerohan Public Market, explained that while she has the authority to increase tomato prices, she only does so if there is a significant supply shortage. She mentioned that the market is currently receiving sufficient deliveries and the supply is steady. Earlier this week, the DA central office informed the national media that skyrocketing tomato prices are expected to decrease by February due to the resumption of production during the dry season
