The Department of Agriculture (DA) predicts a decline in tomato prices by February due to the resumption of production and the onset of the dry season. Prices in Metro Manila markets currently range from ₱200 to ₱300 per kilo, a sharp increase attributed to a 45 percent reduction in production volume caused by typhoons last year.

The skyrocketing prices of tomatoes would likely go down by February, an official of the Department of Agriculture said.

DA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arnel De Mesa said that the steep rise in tomato prices was due to the series of typhoons last year that severely affected crops in their vegetative and productive phases.

Weather Disruptions and Higher Utilities Fuel Inflation in December 2024Weather Disruptions and Higher Utilities Fuel Inflation in December 2024According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), weather disturbances disrupting supply chains and increased utility costs likely contributed to faster inflation in December 2024. The BSP forecasts average inflation between 2.3% and 3.1% for December, with full-year inflation averaging 3.2%. The BSP attributes the upward price pressures to higher food prices due to supply disruptions and increased electricity and petroleum prices. However, these pressures are expected to be partially offset by lower prices for agricultural commodities like rice.
