Tuesday, Jan. 31: A reader recounts a successful public transit experience. Others weigh in on Poilievre; freedom; and Tyre Nichols's death.

It is always easier to criticize by pointing out faults and shortcomings rather than offering solutions or alternatives. And it is even easier to play on people’s emotions rather than present a nuanced and well thought-out plan. So, the challenge for Pierre Poilievre is to articulate what he perceives to be the problems with Canada, come up with specific and viable solutions and present them to the Canadians.Re: Canada drops 7 runs on the Freedom Index, Jan. 27.

According to the co-author of the think-tank piece the article was based on, this tragedy was largely a result of Canada’s imposed COVID prevention measures. Apparently the think-tank had no opinion on “whether the restrictions were necessary and saved hundreds of thousands of lives,” but it nevertheless bemoaned the loss of freedom that these restrictions entailed.Article content

Really?! While I have never been thrilled by COVID restrictions, like many other Canadians I accept that difficult measures had to be taken to protect the health and well-being of my fellow citizens.I find myself wondering how many rungs on that ladder were lost by not embracing semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines. The prominence given to this piece of right-wing, libertarian nonsense was very disappointing.

There is a growing movement, it seems, of violence towards the public. The police are no longer viewed as persons to go to in time of trouble; God knows what kind of reception you will get. Things need to change and soon or the public is going to start fighting back.
