In recent years, Canada has welcomed higher influxes of new immigrants but the supply of new housing has not increased proportionately. Most new immigrants usually rent houses; they are not in a position to buy until such time as they are well-established in Canada. However, this increases the demand for rentals and landlords tend to increase rents, citing inflation and a host of other reasons.
Bill 23, The More Homes Built Faster Act, is an attempt to address some concerns related to the housing crisis in Ontario. However, it does not seem to address some crucial issues related to affordability of housing. Waiving some development fees, an important source of income for cities; allocating less money for public parks; overriding the R1 zoning; curtailing city powers to control what the outside of buildings look like — these are some of the concerns raised by critics against this bill.
A more coordinated approach with inputs from the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government is the need of the hour to make affordable housing a reality for all Canadians.I strongly recommend Canadians seek out author and Sen. David Adams Richards’ commentary on Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act. We find ourselves up against Soviet-style censorship with this autocratic bill. How did it come to this? Wake up, Canadians! Put down your “smart” phones. Reread your Milan Kundera.
