Canada’s federal Tories had themselves a new leader on this date in 1927 with the election of R.B. Bennett at their party’s Winnipeg convention. First elected to the Commons under Sir Robert Borden’s banner in 1911, R.B. was one of Canada’s leading lawyers and a millionaire by virtue of his hard work after growing up in rural New Brunswick.
Three years after becoming party leader, Bennett would receive a majority mandate from Canadian voters and serve as our 11PM until 1935. After his defeat he moved to the United Kingdom and served with great distinction in the House of Lords until his death in 1947. That Bennett, a majority Prime Minister, still lacks a statue in his honour on Parliament Hill is a disgrace both Liberal and Tory governments have continued to participate in for decades.Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon.
