Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was in Washington on this date in 1977 and was feted at a state dinner hosted by America’s new President, Jimmy Carter, and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. The visit marked the first time Trudeau, in office since 1968, met with an American Chief Executive from the Democratic party. The pair of leaders would go on to enjoy a close personal relationship that continued after Carter had left the White House in 1981.
