History was made on this date in 1923 with the swearing-in of Pierre Veniot as New Brunswick’s first Acadian Premier. A journalist and newspaper proprietor, Veniot had previously served in the Legislature and in cabinet as Premier Walter Foster’s Minister of Public Works. When Foster resigned his high office, Veniot became Liberal leader and the province’s 18th Premier.

In 1925 Veniot’s government was defeated, but this wasn’t the end of this Acadian trailblazer’s career. In 1926 New Brunswick voters sent him to Ottawa and he was named by Canada’s Postmaster General by Prime Minister Mackenzie King.is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon.
