A very important political — and scientific and Canadian — anniversary today to celebrate. It was, of course, on this day in 1984 that Marc Garneau became the first Canadian to fly in space. His flight on the space shuttle was indeed the stuff of history.
Not long after Mr. Garneau returned to Canada, I wrote him and he signed and dedicated a picture to hang in our school library.Many years later, while visiting Kingston to help mark Sir John A.’s 200th birthday, Mr. Garneau, who co-led a walking tour of downtown Kingston with me, became one of my planters in my famous garden. Now, only Prime Ministers and Presidents get full trees, so our first astronaut planted a Euonymus that is doing fine ten years later.
