Today in Canada’s Political History: Lord Minto announced as Canada’s next Governor General proving Sir John A.’s prophecy!

The appointment of Canada’s eighth post-Confederation Governor General was announced on this date in 1898. Gilbert John Murray Kynynmound, better known as the Earl of Minto, came from a British military background. He had also served an assistant to Governor General the Marquess of Lansdowne at Rideau Hall from 1883 and 1885. Little could he have imagined the stately home would be his own official residence only a few years later.

Before leaving Canada, however, Sir John A. Macdonald made a prediction about Minto. “I shall not live to see it, but some day Canada will welcome you back as Governor General,” Macdonald told his British friend. Sir John A. proved to be correct.
