TIFF's latest exhibition connects cinematic history with social media via nparts
TIFF’s latest larger-than-life exhibition takes us back to basics and the beginning of film history, with Picture Palace, an interactive space that not only educates film buffs, but offers them the opportunity to make, edit and share it themselves.
Each corner offers a different experience: stepping behind a dolly and learning how a camera moves and works; creating your own Foley sound effects; a tableau that demonstrates the nuances of lighting; a photo-booth that serves as a tutorial on filters and even a dance-along that’ll transport you from Hollywood to Bollywood.
TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey explains that there’s a connection between cinema and social media. “A lot of the mystery has been stripped away from the art we experience; people know the lives of movie stars or how visual effects work, but they don’t actually get to put their hands on that gear themselves.
