Unrest that began with COVID has moved into other areas of public life — be it in hospitals, outside small businesses or at drag events.

Protesters block Highway 4 near the Coutts border crossing on Feb. 3, 2022.While this unrest may have been triggered by the pandemic, many of those who embraced that anti-mandate movement have migrated to other causes as the effects on daily life has largely faded, said University of Alberta professor Timothy Caulfield.

Before the pandemic, anti-vaccine activists largely spoke primarily to niche communities hesitant about childhood vaccines, the study found. It said the expanded movement aided by greater social media amplification could increase future hesitancy, even for non-COVID vaccines. The president of the union that represents Alberta nurses estimated instances of patient-to-worker harassment and violence have doubled since before the pandemic, climbing from about 1,000 cases in 2019 to about 2,000 in 2022. And she said the situation doesn’t show signs of improving.
