Controversial rugby coach Michael Cheika has never been in greater international demand. So why is he taking a lowly ranked team to the Rugby League World Cup?

There are several factors that explain why Cheika has taken on this role with the Cedars when he has so much else on his plate.

"The talent here in Australia around rugby league is clearly going to be greater than it is in Lebanon," explains assistant coach Matt King. "I think being of migrant origins, there is sometimes a sense that you don't belong here and you don't belong there," says his cousin Marie-Claude Mallat. "This is extremely ironic but you're motivated to do things that are then going to make the people who you think are making you an outsider happy. Go figure. Like, is that crazy or what? But that's part of wanting to belong."'You've got to play above your weight'

A sense of chaos surrounded the team and Cheika lost the confidence of management and fans. Cheika developed a reputation as a sore loser, too ready to rail at referees or jump down the throats of journalists. It's a tag he's willing to accept."Have I crossed the line sometimes? Yes, for sure. There's no way I'm going to say I haven't crossed the line. With the right intent? Yeah, maybe.
