Thousands of devotees joined the annual Penitential Walk with Jesus in Cebu City, marking the start of the Fiesta Señor celebrations.

Thousands of Catholic devotees of the Santo Niño participated in the annual Penitential Walk with Jesus in Cebu City on January 9, 2025. The event, a highlight of the Fiesta Señor, saw devotees marching 2.1 kilometers along Osmeña Boulevard to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. Despite rain and the length of the journey, devotees like Eisobel Daroca, a 67-year-old from Asturias, made the pilgrimage to show their devotion to the Santo Niño.

Daroca and her husband, Jill, have been participating in the walk for over 44 years. They believe in the Santo Niño's grace and have witnessed miracles bestowed upon their loved ones. Father Andres Rivera Jr., OSA, the rector of the Basilica, said in his homily that the Santo Niño is the image of God's immense love that arrived in Cebu. The Walk with Jesus was not the only event drawing crowds; the Traslacion in Manila also attracted thousands of devotees. Both events coincided with the feast day of the Nazareno, celebrated on January 9, and the start of the Fiesta Señor, marked on a Thursday before the second Sunday of January
