Authorities evacuate at least 4,000 people as firefighters work to contain a wildfire on La Palma in Spain's Canary Islands.

abc.net.au/news/la-palma-wildfire-thousands-evacuated-canary-islands/102608938At least 4,000 people have been evacuated from the Spanish island of La Palma as firefighters work to contain a wildfire which burned out of control on Sunday.Ten aerial units and 300 firefighters worked to bring the wildfire under control

The fire started in the early hours of Saturday in El Pinar de Puntagorda, a wooded area in the north of the island. As a result, people needed to be evacuated from the villages of Puntagorda and neighbouring Tijarafe. The island has suffered extreme temperatures similar to those seen in a heatwave afflicting southern Europe.

"Now we are going to do a technical fire at this perimeter. We will begin burning that slope so it will come down and stop at the road," Manuel, a firefighter, said."At night the wind is going to come from the top of the mountain downward and if we don't enclose this area, it could jump over."
