Opinion: Thoughts On Chris Olakpe In Death, By Kayode Ojewale
Life is a blend of good times and bad times, mixed with some eventualities which can happen at anytime. While we hope and wish to stay long on earth, the debt we all owe death should motivate us to be involved in deeds that will outlive us. We may not be able to tell when and how we would die, but everyone is sure that they will die someday.– Chuck Palahniuk, American novelist.
Life is a blend of good times and bad times, mixed with some eventualities which can happen at anytime. While we hope and wish to stay long on earth, the debt we all owe death should motivate us to be involved in deeds that will outlive us. We may not be able to tell when and how we would die, but everyone is sure that they will die someday. Today, it’s what Olakpe did when alive that forms discussions around him; it may be the turn of anyone tomorrow.
Olakpe, a devout Christian who was married with children, was born on June 5, 1954. He attended Lagos Baptist Academy, Lagos. He studied Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He was also a professional member of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos. He graduated and joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1982 and he served in various commands and as commissioner of Police in Plateau and Bayelsa States.
It will be recalled that Olakpe died on March 30. The general manager of LASTMA, Mr. Jide Oduyoye, described the death of his chief executive as a big loss to thr LASTMA family, and that, “When someone is a nice person and caring, and you lose such person in this world that we are, you feel sad in you.” Mr. Oduyoye also noted that, “…he was a kind-hearted man. From all stories about him while he was in LASTMA as the CEO, he was a very good man.
