Police say drivers took their burnouts to the streets of Canberra after the festival shut down its cruise circuit early.

abc.net.au/news/summernats-35-attracts-record-crowds-entrants-and-poor-behaviour/101835734The 35th Summernats was the biggest yet, with record crowd and entrant numbers, but the annual car festival was marred by poor behaviour from some attendees overnight.

Officers were called to disperse the crowd and, soon after, police say some of the privately contracted security guards left EPIC, "resulting in an understrength security presence". Police also seized a Holden Commodore being driven by a 20-year-old Murrumbateman man after he was caught allegedly doing burnouts and driving at more than 110kph in an 80kph zone on Barry Drive, near the city, at about 11:30pm.'Disrupters weren't here for Summernats'Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez commended the efforts of police and said it was the first time the festival had experienced such behaviour.

"We understand now that [the closure of the circuit] had an impact out into the city, and I think that goes very much into the lessons-learned category and how we plan that better moving forward," he said. "That is a standard practice, and then manage that area and that behaviour with road closures," he said.

Nearly 40 drivers entered the Burnout Masters this year, with the final 15 burning rubber on Sunday afternoon to determine a winner.Loading YouTube content
