Parents are being forced to choose between their children playing sport and putting food on the table, as the cost of living crisis continues to squeeze out budget non-essentials.

abc.net.au/news/cost-of-living-crisis-after-school-sport-parents-children/102002350Parents are being forced to choose between their children playing sport and putting food on the table, as the cost-of-living crisis continues to squeeze out household budget non-essentials.

"So we live pay-to-pay, because we pay for our kids to do the things that they love, and that's why it's a little bit tighter for us."But Ms Broom admits she and husband Brendan McDonell have recently had to turn down their second child, 13-year-old Charlotte, who is a talented softball and netball player.

"This year alone it's going to cost us probably about $10,000 in fees, and travel expenses and things like that," Ms Broom said."Jack, my youngest, he's a toddler, so he does do swimming now, but I did shop around to find the most affordable place for him to go because it's such an important skill. "Certainly a few of the conversations I've had is where the parents are asking their children to pick one sport, or actually pulling out all together because of the cost.Pine Rivers Netball Association president Rachelle Swan says registration is down.

"At the same time, as sporting clubs are faced with increasing costs themselves, whether it's rental costs, the bills, electricity, and all the rest of it, their viability is reliant on those fees that they charge for membership, so it's a double-edged sword."She said "there are a couple of solutions" for parents and clubs, including carpooling to cut travel costs, and government initiatives like the FairPlay voucher in Queensland.
