Breast cancer patients and advocates are decrying a lack of communication about mammograms for women in their 40s, as claims of pushback from services surface.

The 43-year-old mother of six was eligible for a breast x-ray as part of a national program jointly funded by the Commonwealth and state and territory governments. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Aged Care said there was promotion of "the importance of breast health and breast cancer screening nationally, including for women over 40 years of age.""This is because age is the biggest risk factor in developing breast cancer and most breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50," the spokesperson said.
"I found a lump when I was pregnant, but after seeing quite a lot of different medical specialists, I didn't get a diagnosis until my son was five weeks old.Ms Panitz founded So Brave, a national organisation for younger women with breast cancer "because there's a real gap in that age group in breast awareness … and getting access to a diagnosis, treatment and community".
