Imelda Roche, one of 19 billionaires on the 2023 Financial Review Rich Women List, was at the vanguard of getting women into the workforce.
to Australia in 1968, spinning off the American franchise until it was the most successful branch of the company in the world. They would eventually buy the entire business in 1991 before selling it to Sara Lee in 1997.
When she met Bill Roche in 1957, he was a salesman for Kellogg’s, and the two discovered a shared entrepreneurial flair; before Nutrimetics, they founded a company selling lamps, and then a door-to-door fashion boutique. She credits his early feminism with the flourishing of her own career. It was Ms Roche’s idea to pursue Nutrimetics after seeing an advertisement for a direct selling company from the US and taking a meeting with the general manager; Mr Roche had to be convinced.
Mr Roche’s approach was in stark contrast to other men of his generation, many of whom had to be convinced to allow their wives to work as Nutrimetics consultants, which often involved hosting parties in the evenings. But Ms Roche knew how to win them over. At “sixteen months shy of 90”, Ms Roche says she “retired too early” and remains an advocate of direct selling, speaking “at nearly every conference” she is invited to. The family business, The Roche Group is run by sons Dominic and Damian. Its assets are largely in Queensland and NSW and spans home builder Riba Homes, agricultural properties on the Northern Tablelands of NSW and Calypso Bay Marina, midway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
