Lawrence Ben has arguably been closer to the front line of the worker ascent in America than any other Australian. He says Australia, too, is ripe for better employee organisation in the workplace.
was only just averted last week when Congress passed unprecedented legislation.Campaigns at Amazon, Starbucks, Apple and outdoor gear retailer REI have become trophies in the new wave of organised strike action under a union-friendly Biden administration and a Republican Party torn between standing up for the working classes and defending its traditional supporters in big business.
A lot of this action, Ben says, is the result of a tight labour market, better union organisation, support from Joe Biden, and more focused and favourable coverage from the media. He cites his own union’s first election at Amazon’s warehouse at Bessemer, Alabama, where there was fierce resistance from the company.
Levine says Ben has “prowess for policy analysis and legislative strategy” and “strives to create impactful change for working people and their families”.And he is hoping that Australia, where union membership has declined from 41 per cent of the workforce in 1990 to 14 per cent now, could follow America’s regrowth in union action under the government of Anthony Albanese.
