HALIFAX, N.S. — Do you know what federal riding you live in? Do you know what riding you’ll be in for the next federal election? Every ten years, the boundaries are reviewed to take into account changes in population. It’s a way to make sure all MP’s represent around 85,000 Canadians, give or take 25%. This week, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Procedures and House Affairs heard objections to proposed changes to three Nova Scotia Ridings.

So based on that input, the Boundary Commission went out and revised their proposal and they came back with something completely different. They left Shelburne County in South Shore-St. Margaret’s and they dropped the proposal of tagging in the Sambro Loop in South Shore-St. Margaret's. But instead, they split St. Margaret's Bay right down the middle, and they took everything on the east side of St Margaret's Bay and proposed tagging that on to the Halifax-West riding.

The connections are starting to form between the people who are settling there more with the Hubbards people. They're becoming more part of the bay. But originally, the major population centers of the bay were from Hubbards all the way around to Peggy’s Cove. So you know, the division had never split the bay. The bay at one point was part of Halifax-West. Gordon Earl and Geoff Reagan represented us and did a great job.

They did not go back and have another session after they made their second proposal and 15,352 people were going to be moved from the South Shore-St. Margaret's into the Halifax West without having a chance to provide representation and input to the boundary commission about it. They just came up with this proposal and then they tabled it in the House of Commons.

He wanted Shelburne in. He found the riding large to handle and deal with. And he said he did not see the connection between communities like Upper Tantallon and the rest of Head of St. Margaret’s Bay. This is astounding. This MP lives in St Margaret's Bay. He lives in Ingramport. He should know if he represents the people here that we are a community. Now, why didn't he suggest we go back to the municipal boundary the way it used to be, down in Hubbards? He lives in Ingramport.

The word is spreading and that's the other thing this was never communicated to anybody. It was buried in the reports, and we just found out about it by looking through the layers of report to get past what they had originally as their proposal to get to their conclusion. And it took four or five of us several days to figure out what the actual proposal was that had been tabled in the House of Parliament.
