HALIFAX, N.S. — There have been lots of changes to help move buses around Halifax Regional Municipality more efficiently in the past few years. But in spite of the dedicated lanes and turning signals, Halifax Transit has been reducing services because of labour issues. They are about 100 operators short of meeting their optimal numbers and the union has some thoughts. Shane O’Leary is the President of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 508.

When they removed Protection of Property, because the Crown decided to reinterpret it after 20 some years, we've lost our protection for our members. Our members are getting assaulted and attacked the same as every transit system in North America. The transit operators are a target out there. And they just decided to take away protection for us. So, it's not only underpaid, and overworked, but it's unsafe.

And I'm not going to use his name on here. But he literally openly challenged me after a decision was made. It's been $400,000 for new supervisors who have no power, no authority. So, they're spending an extra $400,000 to hire four new supervisors that are only permitted to write tickets in bus stops. So, they're not going to be able to protect us because we don't have a transit police system. We don't have any enforcement out here.
