Jagmeet Singh on housing, hate and politics | SaltWireHALIFAX, N.S. — Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has ideas on how to help with the housing crisis in Canada. And he takes questions on supporting the Trudeau government, the high cost of everything, and the push to change the political system in Canada.Jagmeet Singh:You were here specifically to talk about housing. Municipalities are blaming the provinces. The provinces are blaming the federal government.

And we're no longer affordable. So that's not working. So what we're proposing is we really need to look at housing in the in the full spectrum. We need all sorts of housing. We need to invest in we need to incentivize private development of rental that's affordable. We're proposing to do that by waiving the GST and HST off of builds that are they meet the definition of affordable rent.

So, we've got to change that. We've got to make housing and the market for housing designed for families, for working people, for kids, for students, not designed to make rich investors even richer. So, we want to fundamentally change that. You've been leader since 2017. I know that pocketbook issues are important to Canadians. You've talked about grocery stores and the money that they're making. But if you do the math, that's $3.6 billion in 2022.

That's a major problem and a big point of disagreement we have with the Liberals and the Conservatives. We want to take on the corporate greed. Stop giving them public money. Make sure they pay their fair share and use the revenue to give people a break through a rebate like that grocery rebate that we fought for, the doubling of the GST rebate or any other form that puts money back in people's pockets so they can afford their groceries and the other necessities.

It's not something they ever worried about. When I was in my twenties, very different from Trudeau and from Poilievre. I was 20 years old, and my kid brother had to come live with me when I was going to university because things are really bad at home. My dad was dealing with an addiction and I had to put food on the table for myself and my kid brother.

And we've got the Competition Bureau, independent, nonpartisan entity that to identify that it's the high cost is their high margins. They are driving up their margins. You're not going to hear Pierre Polieivre or Justin Trudeau talk about CEO greed and the fact that they're ripping off Canadians. I'm the one that called the CEOs to committee. I hold them to committee, asked them questions point blank.

And so we're saying, yeah, they should be paying their fair share. They should be paying journalists for the work that they share on their websites and make money off of the more clicks or the more eyeballs with more time people spend on social media generates more revenue. And if journalists are creating good stories that end up being on social media, then they should get a fair share of the revenue of that.

And just make straightforward sense to me. Many other countries around the world have that. Germany has it, and New Zealand has it, and it gives direct impact of your vote. You feel your vote counting directly towards who you want to represent the country. It would prevent the fear of a small minority of of seats or percentage of votes resulting in a majority government.

It's the most equal that way. And we know that Canadians are fed up with the first past the post system. A lot of polling shows that. So let's give an alternative that's been tried and tested in other countries and give people a chance to see how it works here. And then people can accept it, reject it, come up with something else if they want.I spoke with someone a few weeks ago who said they thought when we came out of the pandemic people would be ready to work together.
